Number of connections guideline

Is there any resource that gives a guideline for the number of connections
that a server should have open?
Does it even matter as long as you're getting the performance you need?Each connection takes around 37KB, SQL is limited to a maximum of 32767
connections, as long as you have loads of memory you should be ok.
