Numbering Lines (Ranking)

I have a report that show all of are salesmen sorted by the number of sales they have. What I have been asked to do is to give them an actual ranking (Number 1, Number 2 etc...). Being fairly new to SQL I am not sure how to do this so here I am.

Thank you for any help that anyone can give me.

You can use RowNumber(Nothing). Check out the docs for more info.

Number of rows in the Excel sheet exceeded the limit of 65536 rows

Hi,
I got this message from the export to xls in reporting services.
Is there a way to prevent this? Can I set some property on the report to use
a new sheet on a group for example?
Thanks

There are a couple of ways to handle this. One way would be to select
the properties on the report control you are using (i.e., table, list,
etc) and select 'Insert a page break after this table' (ie). Another
way to handle this is to select 'Page break at end' as part of the
control's grouping. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help.
It seems that a pagebreak is working on groups.

Here is the limitation of the Excel render in reporting services:
Excel Rendering Limitations
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156418.aspx
Excel 2007 did extend the limitation and you may follow this article:
http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/2005/09/26/474258.aspx
So my suggestion is that you could try to install the latest services pack
and render to excel 2007.

Number of printed pages vs number of pages shown in browser

Help!?!?

I'm going grazy! I have several reports. In the browser the report browser says there are 10 pages. But when I hit print there are 16. What can I do to get te number of pages in the browser the same as there are actually printed? (A4). I've tryied to resize my report etc.. Nothing changed..

Anyone?

The controls display the # of pages when rendering in the controls. It is calculated differently than the page count for printing. This behavior is by design.|||

I guess that is the weird thing about HTML reporting, for me this is unpredictable as long as you have more than 1 page ;-). AFAIK and as far as I guess there is no workaround for displaying the same page number / count of pages like in a pdf.

The issue is that for the viewer controls, pagination is optimized for readability. For things like print, we have to optmize for keeping everything on the actual physical printed page.

Number of pages displayed and printed do not match

I have a report in landscape layout because I have many columns to display.
When I display this report in browser, I see there are 2 pages for this
report. But when I click the print button on page to print it, I got 4 pages
because it's printed in landscape format on paper. Now QA logged this as an
error. Does anybody have any way to make displayed and printed number of
pages match to each other?
Thanks a lot.You need to make sure that Report width + Margin width isn't more than the
given width for landscape. (29 cm or 11 inches.) If they are more than this,
you will get an extra page, and this might be empty. Sometimes an extra page
is added, but there's nothing on it, because your actual table or matrix
isn't that wide.

format. I spent lots of time adjusting this report. There are no empty pages
when printing.
The problem is when I print this report, I got landscape format printed 4
pages in correct format. But when I display this report within browser, the
number of lines on a browser page is more than the number of lines on the
landscape printed page. As a result, on the browser, I only have 2 pages. But
on the paper, I have 4 pages.
Any other suggestions.
Thanks.

Number of Dataset per Report

Hi

I am creating this report which requires 50 datasets to be created.

I was just wondering Is there any recommended number of dataset per report? Or Number of controls per report?

I really dont want to create this big number of dataset per report but sometimes its difficult to explain client.

Regards

Amit

There is not hard limit on the number of dataset or controls per report. It is possible that you might see problems if you have very complex report or if the dataset is very large at runtime depending on what kind of hardware you have (e.g. memory) though.|||

Thanks Fang for your reply.

I think I am not using much complex report. They are all simple queries but have to create separated dataset for each query.

I will make sure that client use the best hardware configuration.

Best Regards

Amit

number in words

Hy,

I use Reporting Services with Visual Studio and in my report I have to write the numbers of my data base in words. For example : "55" has to be written "fifty five".

I have to do that in two other langages: french and dutch.

But I don't know at all how to do that. I never used reporting service before. Can you help me?

Regards

The requirement you present is not a simple one and certainly is not something that supported out of the box.

Your best option is to create a table with the range of numbers you wish translated and a language code column and get some resource to generate the translations manually.

Unless you want to get into custom coding to parse the number and translate it into words in the desired language on the fly, which although an interesting prospect I would certainly not recommend.

Hello Oolon,

I had the same requirement, but I had in english. I did not create a table insted I created two functions and called one from another. First function has all the table values and the second has all the logic.

Number formatting has me stumped

Hi, I dont seem to be able to output a number that has 3 decimal places.
The data source returns eg. 12.564 % and the output format on the report
is ##.###.
The output value though shows 12.56%, I want to show the figure above.
What am I missing or doing wrong? Is there a rounding switch or option I am
missing ?
Thanks in advance .Try this:
#,##0.000
returns:
50.123
0.000
15,050.123
15.050,123 (for example in german systems)

Use "N3" for numbers, or "P3" for percentages. You will see the example
change to the format you are trying to get.

number formats (again!)

Hi

I'm having a problem with displaying my reports through my application at runtime. One of the formula fields on the report contains the id of the record I'm displaying and if the record's Verified field = True, it also shows a string. The formula is this:

If {?PubNoVer} = "Yes" then
if {View_TM_Get_BookID_BY_Surname.Verified} = True Then
{View_TM_Get_BookID_BY_Surname.BookID} & " Verified"
Else
{View_TM_Get_BookID_BY_Surname.BookID} & " "
Else
" "

In the report preview window, this all looks fine but running it through my application made any four digit id look wrong because it added a thousand separator and decimal places e.g. 1,512.00

In a previous post on another forum, a user very kindly showed me that using ToText on the ID field would get rid of the decimal places, so that's fine, but I still have the thousand separator and can't get rid of it!

Does anyone have any ideas?just format the field

right click on field, select format field, go to number that and select the format u want to display in|||just format the field

right click on field, select format field, go to number that and select the format u want to display in

Yeah, I did that but it only shows the correct format in the preview window, when running the report through the application, it shows the thousand separator and the decimal places even though i'd specified for that not to happen!

OK, I've found half an answer on another site. To get rid of both the decimal places and the thousands separators you use:

ToText({fieldname},0,"")

This works but because I'm also grouping on the id field, the ids still show with a thousands separator on the group tree at the side of the report! Anybody know how to format that?!|||You could create a formula like:

right('0000000000' & totext({fieldname}, 0, ""), 10)

and then group on that formula instead of the fieldname.
Trouble is you get a load of leading zeros in front of the number in the group tree.
You could limit this by finding the maximum length of the field with a whilereadingrecords formula and changing the formula to
right(replicatestring('0', {@.maxlen}) & totext({fieldname}, 0, ""), {@.maxlen})

You could use a space instead of a zero, but the numbers in the group tree won't line up, although they will still be in numeric order.

If anyone knows another way (apart from setting the PC's local settings) I'd like to know...|||You could create a formula like:

right('0000000000' & totext({fieldname}, 0, ""), 10)

and then group on that formula instead of the fieldname.

Thanks JaganEllis. Instead of the formula you suggested, I used ToText({fieldname}, 0, "") and grouped on it and this worked perfectly!|||I can see how that helps with the format of the group tree data, but what about the group ordering? Unless all your number have the same number of digits, the order will be messed up (if important to you).
e.g. 300 will be after 2000 because the string '3' is > the string '2'|||I can see how that helps with the format of the group tree data, but what about the group ordering? Unless all your number have the same number of digits, the order will be messed up (if important to you).
e.g. 300 will be after 2000 because the string '3' is > the string '2'

Ah right... I see what you mean! I've used spaces instead of zeros. Thanks!

Number format do not work when exported to excel?

I have a report where I have formated the numbers with #.#. When I run this
repot this works well and give me the decimal only when it is needed.
However, when I export to excel, I get te decimal point even when it is not
needed. For example the when I have the whole number 100 it displays as 100.
in excel.
I could use the N1, but I do not want 100.0 to display either.
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like this is a defect in the export to Excel functionality.

Number Format

Hi all,

I have developed a report in which I need the thousand seperator to be a decimal point.

Instead of presenting the number as 12,923.23 i require that the representation be 12.923,23.

I have tried to customize the the format with the hash value but have had no joy. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ivan

Here's one way to do it. Also if this will be done on the fly, it probably will work best as a user-defined function. You could also nest all of the replace functions for a single select for production, but I did it this way to be more readable.

declare @.test money

Set @.test = '12923.23'

Select Replace(Convert(varchar(50),@.test,1),',','[,]')

Select Replace(Convert(varchar(50),@.test,1),'.','[.]')

Select Replace(Convert(varchar(50),@.test,1),'[,]','.')

Select Replace(Convert(varchar(50),@.test,1),'[.]',',')

print @.test

Thanks for the help, its much appreciated.

I ended up sorting out the issue by changing the language property to Italian on the table and entering 'N' in the format property in the desired column.

This then gives the numerical representation which I was looking for.It works because this is the way that the Italians and many other countries represent their numbers.

You must not write these code in expression editor.

you can write a code as a function in vb.net in report code editor. you need to call that fuction in expression editor.

you can impliment custom code to get the desired results

Have you tried to include a dummy default single resultset and in the
main report filter that resultset out?

Null values in cascading parameters

dear All,

I want to make a Report with attractive selection parameters.
That I mean, there is a parameter, Tparam (Time Param) which will activate other parameters (3 parameters: TimeA_1, TimeA_2 & TimeA_3. These selection values have been registered in the "Aviable values => non-queried".)

when Tparam selected TimeA_1 then Parameter for TimeA_1 will activated (and the others will be disappeared/hidden), vice versa for the other control (TimeA_2 & TimeA_3)

any idea to do that?

thank you...What you want is available, they are called Cascading Parameters, there is a tutorial here
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337426.aspx|||

Hi SNMSDN,

In the link ,you sent i can't find any source regarding hiding or ignoring one parameter using another parameter.

Even i have another problem in setting null values . I have 5 cascading parameters ,level1,level2,level3,level4 and level5

when level1 is compulsory ,i had the remaining 4 parameters to accept for null and are made optional

for this i tried with "Allow null value option" in Report parameters but its not accepting

as an alternative i tried with default value 'Query based' to return null.

None of them directs me towards accepting null

It is aksing to select the parameter

It will be really a great help if some body faced some problem like this and resolved it

Thanks in advance

I have the same problem.

Basically, it appears that if you reference a parameter directly or indirectly via any other parameter's DS, then it will not respect the "Allow Null" setting for that parameter, since it thinks that it is implicitly required.

For example, I have a report with State & County parameters that both need to be set to enable "Allow Null". The County parameter references the State parameter's value within its Dataset, but no other parameter references the County parameter.

As a result, the County parameter respects the "Allow Null" setting, but the "State" parameter does not.

There MUST be a way around this restriction!!!

I have tried to hack around it by creating a dummy parameter called "StateFilter" that uses an expression to either return the Parameter!State.Value or Null, and then the County dataset references this parameter instead of the actual "State" parameter. However, this doesnt work either. Sql RS is "smart" enough to see the indirect reference and continues to treat State as a required parameter.

Help!!!

Nevermind.

I had forgotten about this wrinkle in how report parameters worked, but just now realized that you have to provide an option that has a value of NULL in order to select the "Allow Null" option. Makes sense when you think of it, but it would be nice if RS injected the NULL value option in such cases.

Null values cause row height to change

I have a fairly simple report with several columns in the detail section. I
have set the row height to 0.15in (text is 6pt) and set both CanGrow = false
and CanShrink = false for all textboxes in the row.
The report always renders perfectly in the Visual Studio preview tab and
when exporting to PDF, but I run into problems when viewing it on the report
server webpage. Any row with a Null value in one of its fields is rendered
twice as high as the nomal rows. If I change my query so that it doesn't
return nulls, all of the rows render with the same height as expected.
Anyone else run inot this behaviour?I found a cheap way to get around the problem by replacing null values in my
report with a single space. I used expressions like the following:
=iif(IsNothing(Fields!MyField.Value)," ",Fields!MyField.Value)
This is a pain to have to enter in every field though. I would still like to
know a way to get it to render properly in HTML without having to go to all
this trouble.|||there are two options in ADVANCED PROPERTIES of the textbox (or cell of
a table) which meant expand the textbox to accomodate the data and
shrink the textbox to accomodate the data i think by unchecking those
options (ie not allowing shrinking/expansion of textbox) will resolve
the problem check that out n let me know what result comes out
thanx

Null Values

I have run a report and then grouped values. However some of these values have a 'null' or empty value. How do i change this so that the group name is not blank.

I have tried the following but this does not help:

IF {Subset.SCHOOLCAT} = '' THEN 'other'

It simply blanks out all group names.

I am doing this report on a HEAT System and i know that the reason for this null field is that we have two types of customers and one customer type does not have this field in its tables so it returns the value as blank.

I just need to replace this empty value with a string for consistency value but cannot seem to do it.

Regards

PIF {Subset.SCHOOLCAT} = '' THEN 'other'

Instead of the above code, try the following code

IF IsNull({Subset.SCHOOLCAT}) THEN 'other'|||Many thanks - that seemed to work.

Cheers

Null Value

Hello,

I have SQL 2005 stored procedure to generate parameters in the report.

one of the stored procedure parameters need to be null (one of the @. in the SP)

How can I send null value to the stored procedure ?

Currently I create a new report parameters with default value NULL that it is internal (hide from the user) and I point the parameters in the SP need to be null to this parameters.

This look not a nice solution.

any other solution ?

Have you tried "=Nothing" as the value of the SP parameter?
